Skating and Shinny

Shinny Membership

All shinny participants must have a Free Arnprior Shinny Membership, pay to play and check in at the front desk prior to participating. Online registration is strongly recommended to reduce wait times and guarantee a spot. Participants registering in person at the front desk should expect longer wait times. Shinny Memberships need to be renewed and expire on or before December 31 each year.

Ice Skating and Shinny FAQ

Shinny participants are required to complete an annual waiver which is part of Shinny Membership. This includes all youth shinny (hockey and ringette), as well as adult and seniors shinny participants. Two waivers have been established: one designated for individuals under the age of 16, which a legal guardian must complete, titled "Waiver and Release Form - Shinny (Born in 2009-2018)," and another tailored for adults aged 16 and above, termed "Waiver and Release Form - Shinny (Born in 2008 and before)."

By having the Shinny Membership, this ensures that:

  • Completion of the necessary waivers by all participants.
  • Streamlined online registration process facilitating the collection of corresponding fees tailored to age and residency.
  • Regular updates to the database regarding shinny session times, schedule modifications, and related information provided by staff.
  • Expedited entry into shinny sessions, with all requisite waivers and accounts established in advance, ensuring efficiency and convenience for all involved parties.

This requirement requires approximately five minutes, and we strongly advise completing the waiver beforehand ensuring prompt access to your ice time. Note that Nick Smith Centre employees are unable to complete waivers on behalf of participants due to the legal nature of the waiver.

Upon successful completion of the waiver, participants regain access to the online registration system for Shinny sessions, our quickest sign-up option. Alternatively, those opting for in-person registration at the front desk should anticipate a slight extension in processing time.

There is no cost to the shinny membership.

This process helps support the paperless operation of this program and supports the Town of Arnprior’s commitment to responsible environmental stewardship and resource management.

The waiver can be completed online here.

All skating sessions are 50 minutes in duration.

Children aged 12 years and under must be actively supervised by a guardian aged 16 or older, whether on the ice or as a spectator. It is mandatory for children 12 years and under to wear a CSA-certified hockey helmet. We also recommend that all skaters, particularly beginners, wear a CSA-certified hockey helmet. Bicycle, ski, and snow sport helmets are not permitted. Clean strollers are permitted on the ice. There are 10 skate aids available for use. A limited number of skates and helmets can be borrowed; please call in advance to arrange this.

We encourage online registration. Skaters must use the main entrance of the Nick Smith Centre to access the Arena and check in at the main desk or pay in person before going on the ice. Failure to pay before entering the ice may result in removal from all future skating programs.

What are the Shinny Rules?

All shinny programs are 50 minutes in duration.

These sessions are recreational and non-contact. It is mandatory for all players to wear complete hockey equipment, including a neck guard and a CSA-approved hockey helmet with a full-face mask. Participants must share ice time, and slapshots are prohibited. Each session is limited to a maximum of 20 players and 2 goalies.

Players must use the main entrance of the Nick Smith Centre to access the Arena. Prior to taking the ice, participants must check in at the main desk and complete payment online or in person. Accessing the ice or dressing rooms without prior payment will result in immediate removal from the session. Repeated infractions may lead to suspension from future programs.

A guardian aged 16 or older must remain in the stands at all times during shinny sessions for participants aged 12 years or younger.

Payment must be completed before playing. Individuals who do not pay prior to entering the ice surface will be immediately removed and removed from all future shinny programs.
