E-Waste

E-waste consists of computer towers, printers, scanners, keyboards, phones, fax machines, monitors, CDs, laptops, and other electronic devices.

Hazardous Materials

Household hazardous waste (HHW) can be extremely harmful to humans and the environment. HHW must be disposed of in a responsible, controlled manner. Please do not dispose of HHW in your regular garbage.

Household Hazardous Waste Depot

Arnprior residents can bring HHW for free to the Renfrew Waste Disposal Site, which hosts a special Household Hazardous Waste Depot from mid-May to the end of August each year. Please note that this Site is only available to residential customers. This site does not accept HHW from Commercial or Industrial businesses.

Paints: All types of paint, stains, and varnishes
Solvents: turpentine, ammonia
Aerosols
Pool cleaners
Propane tanks
Disinfectants and household cleaners (i.e. bleach, oven and drain cleaners, furniture stripper)
Herbicides, pesticides and insecticides (i.e. weed killer, etc.)
Used Oil, gasoline and other automotive fluids
Oil filters and empty oil containers
Fire extinguishers
Small Home Batteries, Car and Boat Batteries
Light Bulbs and Tubes
Non-refillable pressurized containers (i.e. acetylene, refrigerant, propane, helium and CO₂ cylinders)

Battery and Cell Phone Recycling Program

Battery drop boxes can be found at the Nick Smith Center, Town Hall, and the Library. Here are the steps for using the program:

Step 1: Determine if the battery can be recycled

Batteries are commonly found in power tools, cellular & cordless phones, laptop computers, digital cameras, two-way radios, camcorders, etc.
All cell phones can be recycled!
Batteries that weigh more than 5 kg cannot be recycled through this program. Batteries weighing more than 5 kg are considered Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and should not placed in the battery boxes or be mixed with regular curbside garbage. The Town of Arnprior participates in a summer HHW depot program at the Renfrew Waste Disposal Site. These batteries may also be accepted at participating retail facilities.

Step 2: Packaging the battery(s)

All acceptable batteries must be placed in a sealable clear plastic bag, such as a Ziploc™ bag or a bag that is provided at the drop box location.
Remove the plastic strip from the top of the bag, fold flap, and seal.
Cell phones must be placed in an individual plastic bag. Only place one cell phone per plastic bag.
Household batteries of the same type (e.g. alkaline batteries) can be placed in one bag.
Batteries with exposed terminals must be tapped over.

Step 3: Placement of packaged battery(s)

Once the battery is properly sealed within the plastic bag, drop the bag into the box provided.
Do not place loose batteries or cell phones in the box. Loose batteries placed incorrectly in this collection box could short-circuit and cause fires. Used batteries may have a residual charge that could cause a dangerous short-circuit.

Caution

Batteries should not be dropped off in ridged plastic or metal containers. Batteries must be contained in a clear plastic and sealable bag.
Do not dump batteries beside the collection box if the box is full. This is a severe fire hazard.
Light Bulbs, Smoke Alarms, or Hygienic Waste (needles or masks) must not be placed in the battery collection boxes.

Additional Drop Off Locations

Ontario's Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) has created a digital map that displays the locations across Ontario where you can drop off used materials to be recycled, such as batteries, electronics, household hazardous waste, lighting and tires, for free. Materials collected at these locations are reused, refurbished, recycled, or properly disposed of to help keep them out of landfill, recover valuable resources and protect our environment.

Light Bulbs

Older style incandescent bulbs can be disposed with your regular garbage.

Rona Home Centre: Please call before you attend the store to confirm that they are currently accepting light bulbs for disposal. They accept fluorescent tubes (4 foot or less) and CFL light bulbs.

Paint

Rona Home Centre: Please call Rona before you attend the store to confirm that they are currently accepting paint for disposal. Any brand of latex, oil (alkyd), enamel or other paints, metal or anti-rust paints, aluminum paint, stains, varnish, urethane, spray paint cans, wood preservative, masonry paint.

Please Note: Paint products must be in their original container.

Please note: Syringes brought back to these locations must be stored in approved bio-hazardous containers. The containers will not be returned.

Smoke Alarms

Standard smoke alarms can be disposed in your regular garbage. However, if you wish to dispose of an alarm that contains radium (this will be indicated on the smoke alarm), please contact the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission at 1-800-668-5284 for proper disposal instructions.
